**\[00:00\]** **Mike:** Okay, playing oh

**\[00:03\]** **Sean:** Shit There's a note take for you. Yeah, that would be great. I'm gonna leave that for you. Here we go. Yeah

**\[00:17\]** **Mike:** Hello everybody we are back with the website 101 podcast and this is a sort of live off the floor version as as we say in music business. We don't really have time to cut a big thing together but we're gonna just record it all at once and we're releasing it. No edits. This is the raw team and we'll see how this goes. Amanda and Sean are here with me. How

**\[00:44\]** **Sean:** you guys do everybody? Hopefully there's not too many mistakes or slipups. Hello

**\[00:49\]** **Amanda:** everyone. Well the reason that we did this is because we're getting to the end of June and summer's about to start, and all of us are going to be really crazy, busy with just life and everything else. But we wanted to leave one last final episode of the season for our listener. This is a special gift from us to you. Thank you, everyone so much, for hanging out with us over the last or so many months for season seven. Hopefully it's been

**\[01:20\]** **Sean:** entertaining and also learning. Yeah this is the season finale for seven we'll be starting up

**\[01:28\]** **Mike:** season eight in the coming weeks I guess we don't quite know yet probably closer to the end of the summer but stay tuned for that subscribe yes subscribe by the way if you like this off the floor stuff you should tune in to our lunch bites on YouTube every damn I always forget first of

**\[01:50\]** **Amanda:** This is the first, the first and third Wednesday on YouTube. We do a YouTube live and it happens at 11.30 a.m. Eastern time and we call it lunch bites because we talk nerdy things at lunch time.

**\[02:04\]** **Mike:** Yeah, and it's off the floor like this so it's very candid and yeah, so we'll see how this goes.

**\[02:11\]** **Amanda:** This should be good. If you go check out our YouTube channel, which we will include in the show notes, all right? And you can subscribe and get notifications, and they will tell you when our next YouTube live is coming.

**\[02:23\]** **Mike:** Right. And by the way, if anyone has any ideas for what we should cover next season on the show, please contact us website 101podcast.com slash contact or reach out on socials or something. And just let us know if you want us to talk about something or interview someone in particular because we have some ideas but we're going to open it up and if anyone has some, let us know.

**\[02:49\]** **Amanda:** Yeah, we're bringing back some guests.

**\[02:51\]** **Sean:** Yeah, we definitely want to make sure that our listeners are getting value out of it. So what you want to hear, we want to deliver. If you want us to revisit a topic as well, maybe it's an older topic and it could be updated. Let us know, we're open to read during topics.

**\[03:10\]** **Mike:** Yeah, sure. If you want to hear more about it, we can elaborate. We can bring someone in, whatever. So let us know. And we do have a topic today that we're going to talk about, right? Amanda, do you want to let people know what we're going to cover today?

**\[03:24\]** **Amanda:** Yes. So one of our podcast reviews that have been posted on one of the many podcast platforms. I forget exactly which one it was. Said something about how we were very cranky.

**\[03:38\]** **Mike:** And we complained a lot.

**\[03:41\]** **Amanda:** And well, yes, that's true. We are very cranky and I think all of us are sort of edging a little more towards get off my lawn. We have all had really great experiences with clients and so everything in this industry is not doom and gloom. We don't hate everybody all the time so we thought that we would just go back and think about a couple of cool ways that we have had really great interactions with clients and maybe If you're a client, some things that you can keep in mind if you want to, you know, keep your contract developer or I guess even, you know, employees and things happy. Yeah.

**\[04:20\]** **Sean:** Any sort of business relationship. I mean, it's just positive feedback. Oh, hey, you did a great job on this. You really, you're over delivered. Yes. Something like that.

**\[04:32\]** **Mike:** Yeah, it could be good. There's lots of things you can do. do and yeah there's lots of experiences. We have had over the years with clients that we love and they've treated us very well. We're going to go through some of those today.

**\[04:45\]** **Amanda:** Is this a listicle episode? Is this what this has turned into?

**\[04:48\]** **Mike:** It might be. Maybe. Maybe. Well, if we figure out how many we're going to give, we'll make that look title.

**\[04:55\]** **Amanda:** We'll count at the end. Yeah, exactly.

**\[05:00\]** **Mike:** Okay, so who wants to start here? We've got a list of what we sort of we're going to talk about.

**\[05:05\]** **Amanda:** I'll start. I'm going to start. I'm going to jump right in and cut both of you off and start taking control. Here we go. This is clearly not the most important thing that great clients do, but pay on time. If you receive the invoice and if somebody has done the work for you, just pay the bill. If it's expected, if it's like within whatever was agreed upon, If it's not a big surprise, if there's nothing that needs to be talked about further, just pay on time. Obviously, that's not the only thing that makes a great client. This really should be base level, but I just wanted to sort of open it up with this.

**\[05:49\]** **Sean:** I agree. I always love it when you have a client. You send them the invoice and it gets paid same day or like the next day. It's always a nice surprise. It doesn't happen often, but wow, it's like, woohoo!

**\[06:01\]** **Mike:** Yeah, and the other thing that I find along these lines that can be an issue is that very often if you're working with a large company or organization, they might have all kinds of weird rules like we pay people after 90 days or whatever or even just they may not think that paying a bill that is a few thousand dollars or whatever is a big deal. But we are self-employed people and every paycheck is important to us and you know it may not be important in the grand scheme of a company that makes millions of dollars but for us it's our bread and butter so yeah paying

**\[06:37\]** **Sean:** on time is always appreciate. When you're revenue is supporting one person and not like a multi-national corporation or you know like a company with like 50 employees it's it's important you can't have Absolutely. Light invoices is like, light invoices equals light mortgage payment potentially.

**\[06:57\]** **Mike:** Yeah, exactly.

**\[06:58\]** **Amanda:** That's right. Let's keep things light. Let's not bring up all the bad stories and ideas and thoughts. That's true, that's true. Keep it light. What is another thing that a client can do to really enhance and make it a really great experience?

**\[07:12\]** **Sean:** Cool project. They've got a cool idea or something that maybe it's gonna stretch my skills because they have this thing that needs to be done. And I know I can do it, but it's like right just outside the edge of what I know how to do. So then I get to learn something. And on top of that, I get to showcase to the world, hey, I built this thing. This is what it does.

**\[07:38\]** **Mike:** And when do you have any examples of cases that you've had situations where you've had a project

**\[07:45\]** **Sean:** that's particularly cool? Well, I do this non-profit organization for Holocaust survivors in here in Canada, and they have these online exhibits, and these projects are just so awesome. There's so many cool things in there. One of the exhibits that we built a couple years ago is bigger than most sites that I've built, and it's like an attach to their main site. And there's just so many things, like, their microsite took me eight months to build. Wow. They're so complex. I've seen some of that work.

**\[08:26\]** **Mike:** It's very impressive. I like it a lot.

**\[08:28\]** **Sean:** Yeah. What about you guys?

**\[08:30\]** **Mike:** Do you have any cool projects? Amanda, you must have. I know. You're more of a programmer than we are. You've got to have some cool stuff that you've done.

**\[08:38\]** **Amanda:** Yes. I'm just going to flat out say yes. I love the tingles that you get at the beginning of a project when you start thinking about all of the cool ways that you could, and not even from the design aspect, but from, I like thinking about the data structure, I like thinking about the user interaction, I like thinking about, even the tricky things, like server management and sending emails and things like that, and looking to see what plugins, what new plugins are available for whatever CMS we're using, and if any of them would be useful. So yeah, I just I love the I love the idea of just digging in like too often with that like sort of initial client call or initial project call already, you know, that night I'll be brushing my teeth to get in bed and I'll like just I'm already like planning all of the structures.

**\[09:31\]** **Sean:** Yeah. Absolutely. I'm on board with that. I love making plans in my head to give the best author experience for my client and And then in turn, they're visitors, so I'm just trying to do the best that I can to optimize for them. It just gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

**\[09:52\]** **Mike:** On that note, we're always talking about craft and CMSs that we use and cool features that we build, content builders and whatever. It's also nice to be able to get a client that it's not that they're bringing you a cool project, but they might be bringing you, you know, pain points or things, features that they want to see in their next site. And you can turn around and say, oh, I can do that. I've built that, or I know the great, the perfect CMS for that feature or whatever.

So it's nice to have that kind of thing happen too. Yeah. OK, I'm going to move it along and talk about testimonials. So one of the things I have stored in a notion document is a list of testimonials I've gotten from clients over the years.

So every single time I finish a project, I asked that client, assuming it went well, and it always has gone well so far. Would you mind writing a testimonial about working with me? Just a little paragraph, a couple lines, and it's so great because, you know, you get this stuff back and they get really deep into all the mic is so creative in this and that and whatever else they have to say about me. And you get all these warm fuzzy feelings and it's really great.

I even heard recently on a podcast that someone has this trick that he does where he takes the testimonials he gets and he boomerangs them to himself through email. Like you can, you know, schedule an email to appear in here. He just randomly picks the testimonial and a random date in the future so that he will remind himself at that time that he got that testimonial. And just cheer him so hard to do that, you know?

Which is nice. I like that. So testimonials is great for portfolios as well because nothing promotes you better than your clients being happy, right?

**\[11:39\]** **Amanda:** So hand in hand with the testimonials would definitely be referrals. I have a couple times. I've gotten just an email from a random person and they were like, oh, so and so referred you. And I'm always so thankful. I will always immediately turn around and email the person who made the referral, who told this new person to contact me. And I'm just like, you know what? I am so happy that you had a positive experience working with me. Thank you so much. You know, again, let me know if you've got any other new projects coming up. But yeah, like that definitely boosts the ego.

**\[12:17\]** **Sean:** Oh, when it happens, it's so amazing. It's like you're walking on cloud nine for a couple of days, just like, woo, yeah. Yeah, look at, I do know what I'm doing.

**\[12:27\]** **Mike:** Yeah, exactly. I still get probably most of my work these days from referrals, from other clients. The fact that the project I'm about to start was a referral from an existing client. And yeah, I agree, it's just excellent when work is sort of thrown into your lap because someone else was happy with the work you did for them.

**\[12:46\]** **Amanda:** That's great. Yeah, absolutely.

**\[12:49\]** **Mike:** All right. Did you guys, have you guys ever received a gift from a client? Several times.

**\[12:56\]** **Amanda:** I have. Yeah.

**\[12:58\]** **Mike:** I have a this is not something that's you know I no one expects this to happen, but it's really cool when it does I had a client one time my company is called bee-like water as you guys know and I once had a client go on to Etsy and Find or I don't know if she commissioned somebody to make a poster that said bullet bee-like water like with all these cool colors and stuff and Head it mailed to me and just because she was happy with the work. Yeah, it was great. I still have that. Yeah

**\[13:26\]** **Amanda:** That's nice. I went time, had to like work. I think it would like work an entire night through just to get last minute changes done before launching the next day. And the client sent me some flowers just to say thank you. Oh nice. That's kind of really nice.

**\[13:42\]** **Sean:** I've gotten flowers and chocolates and you know Christmas cards and things like that. Yeah, and when my father passed away, one of my clients sent me the huge gift basket like I was totally unexpected. It was just amazing. I was like, hey, I'm going to be unavailable for this week because I'm off to visit, you know my, not my father passed away, my mother passed away. I'm off to visit my father. I'm just in whatever and I came back and there's this amazing gift basket. Yeah, that's nice. That's nice.

**\[14:19\]** **Amanda:** I've looked at the cost of gift baskets. I think it would be awesome to send some to clients. They are. They're not cheap. They're not cheap.

**\[14:27\]** **Mike:** Yes, and I have a client that, it's not a client, well, it's an agency that I sometimes work with and they have these sort of Christmas parties and stuff and they send everybody packages of snacks so that when we're having the party online remotely, we can all open our snacks together and enjoy the same time.

**\[14:46\]** **Sean:** Oh, that is a really great idea. Yeah, like that.

**\[14:50\]** **Amanda:** So, like an eternity before COVID, I was working with an agency and they would invite me to their staff parties, to their summer party, to their Christmas party, to, oh, we got like a table at like some fireman banquet fundraiser thing and here's a seat, come with us. And so just like little things like that, this sort of like, just let you know that they appreciate the work that you're putting in. you know, it's always really appreciated.

**\[15:18\]** **Mike:** Yeah, I've been to a few parties as well, like some of those team building kind of things that they put together with the staff, so sometimes they just throw me in, because it's like, well, everybody knows you, everyone works with you all the time, you might as well come down.

**\[15:31\]** **Amanda:** I mean, if you're part of the team that's working with the, you know, other members at the agency, it absolutely makes sense.

**\[15:38\]** **Sean:** And it's always cool to meet these people in person rather than just on a video call and email. like now it's a social thing and you you can gel with them even better. Yeah. Yeah. No, it's

**\[15:51\]** **Amanda:** absolutely true. So yeah, I think that I think that this is a nice little summary of some positive experiences we've had. So a reviewer who left the the fact that the review that we were all cranky, we are. But hopefully this has shown you and maybe other listeners as well that, you know, We do have great interactions with clients.

**\[16:19\]** **Mike:** Yes, and also thanks to our clients themselves. Anyone who happens to be, this podcast is about people who manage websites so it's not just all developers. Maybe we have some clients that actually listen. So if you do, thank you very much on behalf of all of us because we appreciate you paying for our clients.

**\[16:38\]** **Sean:** Without our clients, we wouldn't be here.

**\[16:41\]** **Mike:** Yeah, totally.

**\[16:42\]** **Amanda:** Yeah, cool. So, and to finally wrap it up, I'd like to remind listeners make that leave the reviews on all of the podcast platforms, go to our YouTube's and subscribe. Gentleman, we are at over 100 subscribers. Great.

**\[16:59\]** **Mike:** That's awesome.

**\[16:59\]** **Amanda:** Great, we broke that minor milestone. So hopefully that keeps increasing. Subscribe, get the notifications, and come and join us on the first and third Wednesday

**\[17:11\]** **Mike:** the month for our live lunch bites. That's right. And don't forget to write in with any ideas you might have over the summer of things you want us to talk about. We'd love to hear about it.

**\[17:23\]** **Sean:** And stay tuned for season eight coming up. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure it's going to be our best season yet. We'll have all kinds of awesome topics for everybody. Yep, Yes. Wait an accomplishment.

**\[17:35\]** **Mike:** 8 seasons.

**\[17:36\]** **Sean:** There we go.

**\[17:37\]** **Amanda:** Okay, everyone, have a great summer. Bye. Bye.

**\[17:40\]** **Sean:** Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.
